Pasadena Beautiful 50th Anniversary Celebration
Our 50th Anniversary Celebration will happen on the 21st of October at La Casita del Arroyo. Invitation to follow.
Emina
Darakjy as the Chair of our Pasadena Street Tree Committee, was recently
honored with the WPRA Community Service Award for 2009. Commended
by Vince Farhat, "Emina is known by many as the "Tree Lady" of
Pasadena. Her passion for planting trees has increased the shade canopy
all over the City. She is proof of 'where there is a will, there is a
way'. Her tireless efforts to protect the street trees of Pasadena and
defend trees when the need arises, benefits all of us who live in and
around Pasadena, and is one of the reasons Pasadena is known throughout
California as the 'Tree City'. A protector and supporter of Pasadenas
green spaces, she was green before it was fashionable!"

Wendy, Polly and Andrea spent time in the very weedy triangle where Maple, Eaton and La Tierra meet. Although the ground looked quite dry in April, we were able to pull out many "interlopers." As you can see in the photo, we look like a happy group in spite of the triangle's condition. A message was left for Ana Quintanilla in Public Works to request pick up. In addition to the many weeds, we found trash and some broken glass in the area.
Since these projects started volunteers have helped beautify the Vina Vieja Dog Park, the intersection of Eaton-Maple-La Tierra, the Linda Vista Library garden, San Rafael Park garden, Allendale Library, Senior Center gardens, Central Park, Singer Park and more.
On Saturday, February 28, volunteers will be completing a month long project to restore the gardens of Jackie Robinson Center at 1020 N. Fair Oaks. An important emphasis is to replace all the old inappropriate plants with fresh drought tolerant materials. Its a great way to get in some community service with long lasting results. We help from all quarters. Bring a shovel, your favorite weeder and a pair of gloves.
Here
is February 4th's crew post-weeding. Although a small area that looked
pretty clean at first glance, there was quite a bit of cleaning to do.
We didn't make it into the interior garden. Ana Quintanilla greeted us
and brought trash bags. We bagged our own this time. Photo L to R:
Andrea Nagata, Julie Russell, William Koelsch, Sylvia Hale.
The PB clean-up group met at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, October 22nd to weed and do
a general clean-up at the median triangle bordered by Washington and Glen
Streets.
This
was our Pasadena Beautiful Day project for 2007, and is maturing nicely, but
there were many palm seedlings to be tackled. Martyn Belmont, Page Jackson,
William Koelsch, Andrea Nagata and Bette Cooper worked diligently for one hour.
We were pleased with how much was accomplished. It was a satisfying feeling and
we all agreed it was fun and keeping it to one hour is a good idea.
See Design Award Page for award photos.

We would not have been able to accomplish what we did without the help of the City. The whole crew was incredible. I invite all of you to take a detour one day to visit the area. The median is on Washington Blvd. and Glen (near Lincoln Ave.)

President Bette Cooper who previously served two terms. Directors

On
Saturday April 14th Pasadena Beautiful Foundation members participated
in planting 25 Chitalpa trees on Alegria Street in Upper Hastings Ranch
to celebrate Arbor Day. The Chitalpa is a deciduous fast growing tree
with abundant compact clusters of white to pink flowers which bloom from
May to November. This project was done in partnership with the City of
Pasadena and the Pasadena-Foothills Association of Realtors who paid for
the trees. The pictures show people gathered around a tree planting
demonstration as well as actual plantings by the volunteers. In a couple
of pictures you see Wendy Crowley digging while the rest of rest of us
are directing !

Then
we celebrated Pasadena Beautiful Day on April 21st where we donated a
total of 210 various plants in sizes ranging from 1 to five gallons.
Emina Darakjy and Beth Calleton man our information table. This project
was done in conjunction with Earth Day. The plantings were done all
around the Senior center and in front of the main entrance by the
volunteer group with City Staff pictured behind our banner. Many thanks
to Bette and John Cooper, Tina Fuller, Betsey Tyler, Beth Calleton,
Teri Weeks, Lola Osborne, some youngsters from the Northwest Program, a
group of young children from the KidsCorps Program, who also put
together some flower pots for the Seniors to take home with them. A big
Thank you to Ana Quintanilla and her coworkers from the Parks Department
who dug the holes, prepared the site and planted with us.
On
Tuesday Emina was invited to attend the Senior Center's Board of
Directors meeting and was presented with a plaque thanking PBF
for choosing the Center as this year's site for Pasadena Beautiful
Day. Pictured with Emina is Beth Calleton, President of the Board ,
and Peggy Buchanan, the new Executive Director of the Center.
How does one win a Golden Arrow? An owner or a friend may nominate a property to receive consideration for an arrow by clicking on the Golden Arrow Tab or by calling Martyn Belmont at 626-799-2639 or Bette Cooper at 323- 258-5694. Volunteers drive each of the areas and select up to eight possibilities for an arrow. Those eight are then reviewed by other volunteers who settle on the three to four from each of the 9 areas to receive an award.

In September 2006, the plant bank was rededicated in cooperation with the City and PBF who manufactured a new sign with simple instructions--"Bring a Plant. Take a Plant."

On a rainy Spring day in 2006 several new magnolias were planted along Arlington in the parkway fronting the developing community Mediterranean garden.
